Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Streptomyces coelicoflavus, Gram-positive, aerobic, filamentous septate, rod prokaryote (bacterium). Streptomyces species. belong to the Actinomycetes group and are bacteria that share many characteristics with the fungi. They grow usually as filaments (chains of cells with septae) and often branch to form a network of filaments (mycelium) in the soil. These soil bacteria are responsible for the musty odour of soil. Streptomyces coelicoflavus (also known as Actinomyces coelicoflavus) produces effective inhibitors of alpha-amylase, which could significantly depress blood glucose levels in mammalian systems and be developed towards a possible therapeutic agent for diabetes.
