Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bloom-forming dinoflagellate, (Prorocentrum gracile). Prorocentrum gracile is a armoured, photosynthetic, marine dinoflagellate. It is a planktonic species (neritic and estuarine) in cold temperate to tropical waters. It is known as a bloom-forming dinoflagellate but this species is not a toxin producer. Red tides caused by P. gracile have been reported from Chile. It has been shown to deplete nutrients during blooms and cause anoxia. It is typically found in the intertidal zone at a mean distance from sea level of 40 meters. Magnification: x535 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
