Zika MAC-ELISA test preparations. Microbiologist preparing reagents to be used in the Zika IgM antibody-capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) test (the Zika MAC-ELISA test) developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Zika MAC-ELISA test is used to detect Zika virus IgM antibodies in serum or cerebrospinal fluid collected from patients thought to be infected with the virus. This virus is transmitted to humans via the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. It causes zika fever, a mild disease with symptoms including rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis. In 2015 a connection between Zika infection in pregnant women and microcephaly (small head) in newborns was reported. In 2016 Zika virus was discovered to be sexually transmitted in the USA. This work is being carried out in the USA at the Fort Collins, Colorado, Division of Vector-Borne Diseases (DVBD). Photographed in 2016. | |
