Colostomy in Hartmann procedure. Close-up of an open infected abdominal wound (left) and colostomy (right) formed in the abdomen of a patient following a Hartmann procedure to treat perforated diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is the formation of pouches within the intestinal wall. Here, the pouch ruptured, requiring surgery. A Hartmann procedure involves removal (resection) of the rectosigmoid section of the colon (large intestine). The rectal end of the colon is then closed and the other end is brought through the abdominal wall to form a colostomy. Following surgery the abdominal wound became infected. Here it has been re-opened in order to allow removal of infected and dead tissue (debriding). | |
