Ischemia is a reduction in blood supply to a tissue or organ. Bowel ischemia can lead to inflammation and injury of the intestine. Laparotomy is a surgical procedure involving a large incision through the abdominal wall to gain access into the abdominal cavity. Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) draws out excess fluid from the wound, increases blood flow to the area and promotes wound healing.
