The triiodomethane reaction. Using potassium iodide and sodium chlorate(I) solutions. Potassium iodide solution plus a small amount of acetone, is added to sodium chlorate(I) solution. The reaction of the first 4 test tubes takes about a minute. Notice the reddish-brown colour of iodine solution in the first test tube. Over the next 10 minutes the triiodomethane (iodoform) is precipitated by the simple ketone, acetone. If no precipitate is formed in the cold, it may be necessary to warm the mixture very gently. This reaction will also occur with aldehyde. | |
