Griffon Vulture, Gyps fulvus, can still be seen in the wild in parts of Europe including France, Spain and Greece. Its range extends east to India. It feeds on the carcases of mammals and rips the flesh with its massive beak. It soars effortlessly and in areas where there are healthy populations birds patrol across square kilometres. When prey is spotted the birds follow each other down. This co-operation breaks down and feeding groups are quite violent and quarrelsome. Rocher des Aigles (Eagles' Rock), Rocamadour, France. | |
