Edison's incandescent light bulb. 19th-century illustration of the incandescent light bulb developed by US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931). Edison's design consisted of a carbon filament contained in a vacuum within a sealed glass bulb. By passing an electric current through it, he could heat the filament until it glowed brightly. Edison invented his light bulb in 1879 after investing $50, 000 and a year of his time in the project. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
