Ruhmkorff coil. 19th-century illustration of the electromagnetic induction coil invented in 1851 by the German engineer Heinrich Daniel Ruhmkorff (1803-1877). At lower left is a Foucault interrupter (see image C033/1730). The Ruhmkorff coil could produce high-voltage electrical sparks over a relatively wide gap. The technology was used in the first radio transmitters and in the Crookes and Geissler tubes. A later version was developed into the first alternating-current transformer. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
