Phonograph piano recordings. 19th-century illustration of a phonograph being used to record piano music. Devised in 1877 by US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), the phonograph was capable of both recording and playing back sounds. It used a foil-wrapped cylinder on which the sound receiver vibrated and made a trace using a needle. The recorded sound could then be recreated by attaching a sound horn, adjusting the position of the needle to the start of the trace, and rotating the cylinder. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891). | |
