Colostomy following bowel surgery. Abdomen of a patient who has undergone a Hartmann procedure for perforated diverticulitis. Diverticulitis is the formation of pouches within the intestinal wall. Here, the pouch ruptured, requiring surgery. A Hartmann procedure involves removal (resection) of the rectosigmoid section of the colon (large intestine). The rectal end of the colon is then closed and the other end is brought through the abdominal wall to form a colostomy. The colostomy is functioning well, and an ostomy bag is in place to collect the bowel contents. The incision (upper left) was left open because of contamination (stage IV procedure) and is being treated with a negative pressure wound healing device (not seen, see C029/6309). | |
