Yellow fever vaccine production. Researchers in the 1940s passing chicken embryo pulp through centrifuge tubes as part of the production of a vaccine for yellow fever. Research by Hargett and Burruss facilitated the production of this vaccine without the use of human serum. A cell culture method was used to produce the vaccine. Yellow fever is a tropical viral infection transmitted by mosquito bite. It causes fever, nausea, and headaches. A toxic form of the disease can lead to jaundice, internal bleeding, and death.
