Yellow fever military tests, Cuba. Detachment of the Hospital Corps, on the steps of Camp Columbia's hospital in Cuba, in September 1900. Volunteers from this group served in Walter Reed's groundbreaking yellow fever experiments of 1900-1901, which demonstrated that the Aedes aegypti mosquito was the vector for the spread of yellow fever. US Army physician Walter Reed (1851-1902) specialised in the study of epidemic diseases. He had been appointed to investigate yellow fever in Cuba. By showing that yellow fever was spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, he played a key role in campaigns to reduce the spread of this disease. | |
