Gravity waves from black holes merging. Illustration of the merger of two black holes and the gravitational waves (represented as blue ripples) that spread outwards as the black holes spiral toward each other. The black holes were around 14 and 8 times the mass of the Sun, until they merged, forming a single black hole of about 21 times the mass of the Sun. This was the second black hole merger observed by LIGO. Detected on 26 December 2015, the merger was designated GW151226. Gravitational waves are a prediction of Einstein's theory of general relativity. Image published in June 2016. | |
