LIGO gravity wave detections. Map of the southern celestial hemisphere, showing the approximate locations (coloured lines) and dates of the two gravitational wave events detected so far by the LIGO detectors. The LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory) detectors in the USA record the gravity waves produced by the merger of large black holes. The first observation (14 September 2015) was designated GW150914. The second observation (26 December 2015) was designated GW151226. The coloured lines represent different probabilities for where the signal originated, from 90 percent (purple) to 10 percent (yellow). Image published in June 2016. | |
