RMS Oceanic in harbour. Transtlantic passenger liner RMS Oceanic docking in a harbour. This ship, operated by White Star Line, was among the largest ships in the world. It was launched in 1899 and was 215 metres in length. It had a capacity for 1710 passengers and 349 crew. On the outbreak of war in 1914, the Oceanic was converted into a armed merchant cruiser, and designated HMS Oceanic. Two weeks later, the ship ran aground on reefs off the Shetland islands and was wrecked. This photograph, dating from 1903, is from the Detroit Publishing Company. | |
