Schiaparelli EDM at its landing site on Mars, illustration. Launched in March 2016, the European Space Agency's Schiaparelli ExoMars Demonstrator Module (EDM), entered the Martian atmosphere on 19 October 2016. It was equipped with heat shields to protect it as it slowed to around 1700 kilometres per hour, a parachute, radar system, and thrusters to further reduce its speed, and a crushable structure to protect it when the engines cut out 2 metres above its landing site on the surface of Meridiani Planum. Unfortunately contact was lost during the descent. Telemetry data indicates the thrusters switched off prematurely, and the lander crash-landed on the surface from a height of several kilometres. | |
