Earth's first oceans, illustration. It is thought that the earliest oceans formed approximately 4 billion years ago during the late Hadean eon. After the hot volcanic conditions of early Hadean, the Earth began to cool. Water vapour condensing out of the atmosphere fell as rain, creating hot oceans which cooled further, producing the conditions in which life later emerged. A waterspout and lightning illustrate the turbulent atmosphere over the waters of early Earth. | |
