Prehistoric Earth. Illustration showing how the surface of the Earth may have appeared during a period known as the Hadean eon. The Hadean eon began with the formation of the Earth from the accretion of rocks and dust about 4.6 billion years ago, and ended about 4 billion years ago. Meteorite impacts generated great heat, and massive volcanoes and lava fields dominated the landscape. About 500 million years after its molten birth the Earth's surface began to cool, allowing a solid crust to form. | |
