Flora Wambaugh Patterson (1847-1928),US mycologist and plant pathologist. Born Flora Wambaugh (marrying in 1869),Patterson studied at Antioch College,Cincinnati Wesleyan College,the State University of Iowa and Radcliffe College. Her research spanned 20 years. She carried out studies into fungal diseases of plants,other disease-inducing organisms,the economic impact,and means of eradication of such diseases. She worked at the Gray Herbarium at Harvard and from 1895 worked for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a plant pathologist. She was the first woman mycologist at the USDA. Her work identified many new fungal pathogens. This photograph dates from the period 1910 to 1920. Patterson retired aged 75 in around 1922 | |
