55 Cancri e exoplanet, illustration. This hot, rocky exoplanet is nearly two times the diameter of Earth. Observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope show extreme temperature swings. This planet is tidally locked to its star, which means that one side always faces its star while the other side remains in the dark. It is thought that the sun-facing side of the planet has liquid lava-like rock flows, while the colder, dark side has solidified rock. Such a lava planet would have dust streaming off it (shown here) as radiation and the stellar wind from the nearby star blows off the material. Artwork published in 2016 | |
