African elephants. Aerial photograph of a herd of African elephants (Loxodonta africana) crossing a river. Some of the elephants have sucked mud up their trunks and splashed it over their bodies. This stops their skins from drying out and helps to keep them clean. The African elephant is the largest and heaviest land animal, sometimes weighing over 7000 kilograms. They eat grass, bark and leaves, and live in large social groups throughout central and eastern Africa. Herds are led by a mature female. Sick and elderly elephants are cared for by healthy herd members, and these mammals may live to be 70 years old. Photographed in Amboseli National Park in Kenya | |
