Sea otter. Sea otter (Enhydra lutris) floating in a bed of bull kelp (Nereocystis leutkeana). This mammal dives for crabs, sea urchins, clams, mussels, octopuses and fish, which it eats piece by piece while lying on its back. A rock may be used to crack open shelled food. Sea otters live in shallow water along coastlines. Their streamlined bodies and webbed hind feet are ideally suited for hunting in water. They keep warm in cold water due to the insulating effect of air trapped in their fur. Photographed in south- eastern Alaska,USA | |
