Blue whale. Blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) breathing out through its blowholes. When the warm moist air is forced from the whale's lungs it is seen as a spout of misty air. The blue whale is the world's largest animal and may be the largest animal ever to have lived, averaging 24 metres in length. It is a baleen whale with up to 400 large baleen plates, formed from bristles, hanging down from its jaws. It feeds by swallowing sea water and then pressing its tongue against the bristles, pushing the water out and trapping the krill it eats. Blue whales are found in all of the world's oceans.
