Hyacinth macaws. View of two hyacinth or blue macaws (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus). One of the birds is grooming the other. The hyacinth macaw is the largest parrot species, growing up to a metre in length. It is seen in forests and open areas near trees in Bolivia and Brazil. Hyacinth macaws live in small flocks made up of pairs of birds and nest in trees. They eat fruits and seeds, and use their large, powerful beaks to crack open tough nutshells. These birds used to be very popular as pets, and were extensively trapped for export. Photographed in Brazil | |
