Horned grebe (Podiceps auritus) sitting on its nest. The horned grebe inhabits much of North America and Eurasia. It is a migrant, breeding in the northern parts of its range and spending the winter further south. It is found on lakes, rivers and streams, but also on calm coastal areas, such as protected bays. The horned grebe is largely monogamous, selecting a partner after complex courtship rituals. Both partners help in the building of the nest, which is constructed from plant material. Usually, between four and six eggs are laid, which are incubated for just over three weeks. Both parents feed the young. The horned grebe feeds on small fish, insects and amphibians |
