Firefly. Macrophotograph of a firefly (family Lampyridae) in flight. This small beetle is named for its ability to flash its abdomen,as seen here. The production of light by an organism is known as bioluminescence. The firefly does this by using an enzyme (luciferase) to oxidise a chemical in a chamber in its abdomen. The firefly controls the flashes by regulating the amount of oxygen that enters the chamber. The flashes of light are used to attract mates. Magnification: x2.25 at 6x9cm size | |
