Pill woodlice (Armadillidium vulgare) clustered together. The woodlouse is not an insect. It is a small,terrestrial crustacean of the order Isopodai. The wooodlouse has a head,segmented thorax and an abdomen. It is covered by a hard exoskeleton made of chitin,which its sheds four or five times,while it grows. The woodlouse is prey for many animals,and protects itself by rolling into a ball. The woodlouse lives in moist environments,such as under stones,and in bark and decaying vegetation.
