Daphnia sp. Light micrograph of a water flea Daphnia sp.,in side view. This is a small fresh- water crustacean commonly found in ponds. The dark eye spot is seen at upper right; digestive tract and body organs are visible. Next to the eye spot is the second pair of antennae, which are branched and bear several long hairs. These second antennae (called biramous appendages) serve as "rowing organs" propelling the creature through the water in jerky movements. It feeds on algae. Daphnia sp. are often used in aquariums as live fish food. Magnification: unknown | |
