Land hermit crab (Coenobita perlatus). This crab inhabits coasts in the tropical Indo-Pacific region, including northern Australia and New Guinea. It scavenges on dead animals along the shore. Although well adapted for a life on land,it has to remain close to the sea to obtain enough moisture to prevent it from drying out. During the hottest part of the day,it buries itself in damp sand. This crab does not have a shell of its own, instead using one discarded by a snail. As the crab grows,it must find successively larger shells to inhabit | |
