Foraminiferan shell. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the shell of a foraminiferan. This single-celled animal,a relative of the amoeba,is found in marine environments. It inhabits a multi-chambered calcareous shell. Fossilised foraminiferans serve as a useful guide for ageing the rock formations in which they are found. This specimen was found among Holocene-era sediment deposits in the Soledad Basin in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Baja California,Mexico. Magnification: x140 when printed 10cm high | |
