Balantidium protozoan. Light micrograph of a section through the human large intestine showing infection with the ciliated protozoan Balantidium coli. This parasite is a rare cause of dysentery (bloody diarrhoea) and can cause ulcers if it invades the intestinal mucosa. Here, three tropho- zoite forms of the protozoan are seen at centre (oval). Hair-like cilia used for locomotion are just visible around their edges. These ciliates multiply in the intestinal lumen and then pass out in the faeces as cysts. Pig farmers are the most likely human hosts as they can contract it from the faeces of pigs in which the infection is harmless. Magnification: x160 at 35mm size | |
