Eagle Nebula (IC 2177). This is an emission nebula found in the constellation Monoceros. The head of the eagle is the emission nebula NGC 2327 (upper right). Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space, many light years across. They are called emission nebulae when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light. The hydrogen gas is ionised by nearby stars,in this case several star clusters, such as the ones at upper left. NGC 2327 surrounds (and is ionised by) the star seen at its centre. Nebulae contain the materials to form new stars and planets | |
