Coronary arteries. False-colour X-ray of a normal heart. The image has been computer processed to highlight the right (seen at left) and left coronary arteries. Although the heart muscle is continuously pumping blood,it does not obtain much oxygen from this flow. The blood supply of the heart is provided by the two coronary arteries which arise from the aorta, the main artery which supplies the whole body with oxygenated blood. If the coronary arteries become narrowed parts of the heart muscle are deprived of the right amount of oxygen. The result of this may be angina pectoris (strong chest pain) or,eventually,a myocardial infarction | |
