Prosthetic hip. Artwork of a prosthetic (artificial) hip joint in place. The pelvis is seen at upper centre. The prosthesis (white) is at lower left. A prosthetic hip joint is used to replace a hip joint damaged as a result of arthritis (shown as an orange area, right) or a fracture. During a hip replacement operation the ball at the end of the thigh bone (femur) is cut off and a metal ball, with an anchoring rod,is cemented in its place (white). A cup to fit the ball is screwed into the pelvis. This then articulates in the same way as the original joint. A hip replacement can dramatically improve hip mobility, but the components can loosen with time | |
