Multiple sclerosis. Coloured magnetic resonance image (MRI) brain scan of a patient with multiple sclerosis (MS). The cerebral hemispheres are yell- ow (grey matter) and blue (white matter). Demyel- inated lesions, due to the destruction of the myelin sheaths around nerve fibres in MS victims, appear as bright circular regions (green) near the centre of the brain. The progressive, patchy des- truction of myelin sheath in the brain & spinal cord causes symptoms ranging from unsteady gait, tremors and speech defects to paralysis and death. The cause of MS is unknown, although genetic fac- tor are thought to be involved. The search for a cure is still in progress | |
