Multiple sclerosis. Coloured magnetic resonance image (MRI) brain scan of a patient with multiple sclerosis (MS). The cerebral hemispheres are green (grey matter) and blue (white matter). Demyelina- ting lesions,due to the destruction of the myelin sheaths around nerve fibres in MS victims,appear as bright circular regions (red) near the centre of the brain. The progressive,patchy destruction of myelin sheaths in the brain & spinal cord causes symptoms ranging from unsteady gait,tremors and speech defects to paralysis and death. The cause of MS is unknown,although a genetic factor is thought to be involved. The search for a cure is still in progress
