3D CT (computerized axial tomography) scan through the abdomen and pelvis, reconstructed by a computer to show an aneurysm of the lower abdominal aorta and the right kidney. CT is a non-invasive method to image different body parts that utilizes x-rays interpreted by a computer. An aneurysm is an abnormal enlargement of a blood vessel. In this case the major artery in the abdomen (abdominal aorta) is aneurysmal. This is the long cylindrical tube like structure. Aneurysms can lead to serious problems if they rupture and cause severe blood loss or if tiny pieces of arteriosclerotic plaque build up and are dislodged and travel downstream to block smaller arteries. The kidney is the ovoid red structure to the side of the aorta. You can clearly identify the lumbar (low back) spine and bones of the pelvis | |
