False-colour Transmission electron micrograph of the Human Immunodefficiency Virus (HIV),the principal causative agent of AIDS. The virus may be transferred through body fluids, notably blood, semen and vaginal fluid. The virus causes a reduction of the body's ability to form an immune response. After an incubation period of several years, the patient may develop AIDS,suffering weight loss, fever and other symptoms before dying from normally non-life threatening diseases. Originally related to drug abuse and homosexual groups,AIDS is now prevalent among heterosexuals. Magnification x72,000 at 35mm size | |
