US pilots with a British Spitfire during the Second World War. They are wearing British flying kits. The aircraft and kit were supplied under the Reciprocal Aid Program between the UK and the USA,who entered World War II in December 1941. The Spitfire, designed by R. J. Mitchell for the Supermarine company, entered service in 1939. Over 20,000 were built before production ceased in 1948. The Spitfire, along with the Hawker Hurricane, played a major role in maintaining British air superiority during the war. This official British war photograph dates from February 1943 | |
