Quo Vadis film poster. Captioned 'Nero sings while Rome burns',this poster advertised the 1913 film 'Quo Vadis',based on the novel of 1896 by Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz. This silent film,one of the first blockbusters,was produced by US cinema pioneer George Kleine (1864-1931) for the Italian film company Cines. The director was Enrico Guazzoni. This chromolithograph poster was printed in the USA by the National Printing and Engraving Company. Citizens of Rome are shown fleeing the fire while the Roman Emperor Nero plays the lyre. This fire is known as the Great Fire of Rome,and started on the night of 18-19 July in 64 AD. It burned for six days and caused widespread destruction | |
