Pressure sore in a paraplegic patient. Paraplegic patient with a huge infected stage IV sacral pressure sore. There is exposed necrotic bone and a great deal of black, necrotic tissue. This pressure sore has developed on the sacral (base of the spine) area of the back of a paraplegic patient. Pressure sores (decubitus ulcers) occur on people who are immobilised or bedridden. Constant pressure on an area of skin causes it to break down, leading to infection. Infected sores enlarge and deepen over time. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs and dressings, although large sores such as this may take a very long time to heal. Prevention of pressure sores is easier than curing them | |
