An overview of the remains of the ancient Roman city of Herculaneum, southeast of Naples,Italy, with the modern town of Ercolano above. When the Mount Vesuvius volcano erupted in AD 79,Herculaneum and Pompeii were buried in ash and other volcanic products known as a pyroclastic flow, which preserved much of what is visible today. The arches of the so-called boat houses of Herculaneum are visible at bottom, marking where the shoreline would have been at the time of the eruption, with the Area Sacra and Terrazza di M. Nonio Balbo above, while Vesuvius is just visible at top right | |
