Charge-coupled device. 300-micrometre-thick charge-coupled device (CCD) with more than 21 million pixels. This 300-micrometre-thick CCD is being tested at the University of California's Lick Observatory. Astronomical CCDs,most of them thinner than human hair, have replaced photographic plates. CCDs have proven to be up to 100 times as sensitive as photo-emulsions and give telescopes power to reach deep into the universe. Berkeley Lab researchers created astronomic CCDs that are both rugged and sensitive to light, from X-rays to the near infrared, with extreme efficiency and long wavelengths.
