African elephant hunt. Illustration of an elephant being attacked by a hunting party using spears. Such hunts were observed by British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873). Livingstone studied medicine and theology in Glasgow before being ordained in 1840. He explored southern Africa,travelled along the Zambesi River,and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior,wrote accounts of the native peoples,and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain,he died in Africa.
