Newborn Thompson's gazelle (Gazella thomsonii) being licked by its mother. The female Thompson's gazelle gives birth to a single calf after a gestation period of 5 to 6 months. The female will leave the herd to give birth alone. The calf, which is helpless at birth,is left to lie in long grass for the first 3 weeks, with its mother returning several times a day to nurse it. After this time the calf is able to run and will join the herd with its mother. Thompson's gazelles inhabit plains and grassland in Tanzania and Kenya. They live in transient herds that can number thousands. Photographed in Masai Mara National Reserve,Kenya,Africa | |
