Sparring African elephants. View of two African elephants (Loxodonta africana) sparring. The African elephant is the largest and heaviest land animal alive today. They can weigh over 7000 kilograms. They are herbivores which live in large social groups throughout the plains of central and eastern Africa. They eat grass, and have been known to push down trees to eat the leaves. Fights between elephants are rare, although play fights between young males occur frequently. They ram each other with their heads, wrap their trunks around the other's head or trunk, and try to force him backwards. Photographed in the Hwange National Park,Zimbabwe | |
