Cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) next to water. One cheetah is licking the other's head. The cheetah is the fastest land mammal. It can reach speeds of over 110 kilometres per hour, but only in short bursts. It hunts by getting very close to its prey (small antelopes) and then sprinting. Female cheetahs without litters are solitary, although young females usually occupy the same home range as their mother. Sibling males leave their mother's home range, but remain together and may be joined by an unrelated male. Cheetahs inhabit the savannah and grassland of sub-Saharan Africa.
