Leopard (Panthera pardus) behind branches. The leopard is an adaptable hunter, preying on animals from birds and rodents to large antelopes and baby giraffes. Although it is relatively small for a big cat,the leopard can lift prey items up to twice its weight into trees, where it caches them for safekeeping against competitors. The distinctive spotted fur camouflages it when stalking its prey. Leopards are found in wooded savannah and forests throughout sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. They vary considerably in size and pattern throughout their range. Some populations are endangered. Photographed in Harnas Wildlife Reserve,Namibia | |
