Whistling rat pups (Parotomys brantsii) suckling. The whistling rat reproduces during the rainy season. A mother gives birth to a litter containing between 3 to 4 pups after a gestation period of 38 days. The pups are independent after just 5 weeks. This allows the mother to have up to 4 litters per breeding season. The whistling rat is a social rodent that lives in burrows in semi- arid regions of south western Africa.
